A transmission is a configuration of gears invented due to the physics of a car engine. There are two basic types of transmissions: manual transmission and automatic transmission. The main difference between the two is that the former needs a clutch and gear shift stick, whereas the latter works automatically as soon as the car is put on drive.
Whether it is a manual or automatic, transmissions are necessary because they make sure that engines work below their corresponding redline or maximum revolutions per minute (rpm). Beyond this maximum rpm, engines might go overboard and explode. By allowing gears to shift as a car speeds up or slows down, transmissions make engines stay below the redline and make them work at the rpm range of its optimum performance.
Such is the importance of engine and transmission to our lives that we need to take care of them properly. However, despite preventive maintenance measures, there will ultimately come a time when our car will need an engine rebuild and transmission rebuild to keep it running smoothly.
